Since 2008, we have been working at the Spiti valley, close to the Tibetan borders. Life of the local people is quite rough and they have been dealing with the lack of finance especially for the education of their children. Therefore, we cooperate with women from the village Demul who took their future into their own hands and are very active. They started to weave traditional shawls, not only to secure their livelihood, but also to provide education to their children. Part of the proceeds was used as a capital for the establishment of school.
22 women from the five Himalayan villages of the Spiti valley weave traditional shawls at home. Together they founded the association called “Himalaya Handicraft – Spiti Self Help Group”, which produces during winter season shawls, carpets and knitted socks. In the village Demul they founded a school called Kunsel for 28 children. The women donate 20 % of their proceeds on the purchase of books, school supplies and the teacher’s salary.
